當觀察到女性有明顯乳頭勃起(nipple erection)時,異性戀男性不但更為願意與之有所互動,

這項研究的樣本為421名學生(75位男性,346位女性),實驗素材則是取自於網路上的現實女性照片,
圖中女性都穿著整齊並身處公開場所,臉部則覆上白色方塊以遮蔽表情等特徵,
每張相片都分別有乳頭勃起和未勃起兩種版本;在看完一系列的照片後,
受試者需回答15個關於圖中女性的利他行為可能性問題(the likelihood of altruistic behaviors),
這些問題有些是關於受試者本身意圖(Intended, 例如”是否會借她100美元”),
有些則是受試者對圖中女性的期望(Expected, 例如”是否會請她幫個忙”),
不同問題也反映了與圖中女性不同程度的互動或是否願意將其納入社交圈,
像是比起單純借錢,分享食物就被研究者界定為有著較高互動性的行為.
而分析結果發現,女性的乳頭勃起與否確實對男性造成了顯著行為影響,
男性不僅有著對乳頭勃起女性提供更多幫助的意圖,也更願意將她納入社交圈內,
同時也期望該女性對待他們更為利他;相反的,女性受試者卻較為不願意幫助乳頭勃起女性,
亦更不傾向於將乳頭勃起女性納入自己的社交圈之內─
對此,研究者認為這是因為勃起的乳頭對男性而言有著更高的吸引力(attractive),
由於乳頭勃起與性興奮有關,這也能讓男性產生”這些女性對我有(性的)興趣”的推論,
故而願意與其互動和提供幫助;另一方面,這樣的吸引力則會被其他女性視為婚配市場上的競爭者,
甚至是性方面的對手(sexual rival),因此乳頭勃起反而降低了其他女性的利他行為.
